REVIEW: Susperia - Predominance Nuclear Blast, 2001
9/10
Susperia - Predominance - cover art Susperia is a band that most fans of Norwegian black metal probably already know of. Although this is their first album the members of the band are by no means newcomers in the metal world. The main character of the band is no other than Tjodalv from Old Man´s Child and Dimmu Borgir. The band was formed in 1999 under the name Seven Sins but they had to change because of another band with the same name. After recording their first and only demo "Illusions Of Evil" in the end of 1999 they were offered a multi-record deal from Nuclear Blast and this album clearly shows why. This is no regular black metal and there are absolutely no keyboards which makes them something completely different from both Dimmu Borgir and Old Man´s Child. Otherwise the music is closer to Old Man´s Child with the thrashier style of black metal that Galder masters so well. Tjodalv has without a doubt also learnt a thing or two and this is definitely as good as the early Old Man´s Child albums, if not even a little better. The music never gets boring; the guitar riffs keeps changing all the time, the drumming is very complex and the vocals are varied with everything from whispers and clean vocals to regular black metal screeches. Susperia will be around for some time now and there is a lot of great music to look forward to I assure you. Susperia has managed to produce the best album so far this year with the help of Peter Tägtgren and Lars Szöke at Abyss Studio in Ludvika, Sweden.
