I don't think anyone would have predicted the musical evolution of Norway's Susperia after having heard only who the band members were. Rooted in the country's legendary black metal scene they have taken a couple of steps forward and created something that doesn't sound like anything we've ever heard before. Blending elements from the more extreme side of metal - black, death and thrash metal - with traditional heavy metal and influences from the gothic scene they released a highly impressive debut album in "Predominance" in 2001. After yet another album for Nuclear Blast they have now signed with the new native label Tabu Recordings (part of the Tuba Records group). The band's second album "Vindication" was more or less a copy of the debut album and even though I liked it a lot it did probably only appeal to the loyal fans. However, with "Unlimited" they take the next logical step in their career. There are no obvious highlights as there has been on the two previous albums but the music is more varied and the vocals have also become more diverse. Athera has always had his own way of singing and he is certainly very important for the band's unique sound as a whole. All the band's characteristics - the guitar sound, the sharp riffing, Athera's dark vocals - are here but this time they have not copied themselves which at least I appreciate. Old fans will probably not be disappointed with "Unlimited" either. The songs are not as strong but they are moving in the right direction I hope.
