REVIEW: Susperia - Vindication Nuclear Blast, 2002
9/10
Susperia - Vindication - cover art Susperia released one of the most interesting debut albums I've heard last year and now they are ready to unleash the beast within for the second time. Featuring the super-human drumming from Tjodalv (ex-Dimmu Borgir) and the anguished screams of Athera fans of all metal genres should be interested in getting to know this band because they are certainly one of the most unique new bands out there today. Nuclear Blast were quick to pick the band up for a four album deal and there are reasons for this. One of them might be that these guys are well-known to fans of Norwegian extreme metal but the most important is that Susperia have found their own unique sound with influences from gothic rock, classic heavy metal, thrash metal and black metal. I was very impressed with the unusual riff combinations and wonderful vocal lines on their first album and I'm glad to see that they have continued exploring these musical territories even further on their follow-up. This time they are also using more of the characteristic dark semi-clean vocals, giving them a slightly more gothic sound. If you want to hear metal that has never been played before Susperia is a very good band to start out with. They did recycle at least one riff from their first album but I guess I can take it when the music is so beautiful.
