How does it feel to be wrong? That's right, I'm asking this question of some of the press types and reviewers out there. The band's own press sheet says Suzukiton is for fans of The Fucking Champs, Pelican, and Dysrhythmia. Crucial Blast mostly got 2 outta 3 but the jazz-inflected magic of the last band quoted above is just not quite right. They're very good -- I love eem and they have gigged together -- but their brand of music is not really like Suzukiton. Our friends at StonerRock.com also refer to Dysrhythmia in addition to Keelhaul (maybe) and Mastodon (kinda), among others, but where is any mention of Karma to Burn or The Atomic Bitchwax, I ask? Nowhere, thatfs where.
All my petty ranting aside, which is really comedic if you ask me, Suzukiton's perhaps biggest claim to fame is that drummer Bryan Cox hails from Alabama Thunderpussy (and maybe some other members have related heritage, too). Regardless of who last played with whom, this band hails from Richmond, VA (see #11) and couldnft be further from fellow townies Lamb of God. Aggression is not the name of the game here, but rather hypnotic grooves, monstrous drumming, crushing riffs, and soulful leads. This band jams at the crossroads of Thrash, Stoner, Sludge, and Math while throwing in some Southern and Prog-Rock. This is a fantastic blend of styles that works well in the instrumental vein.
The record was recorded in February 2002 but not released until mid-2005. Why? Who knows? The correct answer is who cares! Just be glad that this is lurking out there at all. I aim to track them down in the live setting one of these days and recommend you do the same. Back to the front, so perhaps the reviewers I kind of lashed out at were not completely wrong, but I still don't think these other guys got it quite right. Can I set the record straight? Suzukiton is for fans of The Fucking Champs, Karma to Burn, and The Atomic Bitchwax. There. I said it. Damn, it feels good to get that off my chest. Rawk on, brothers! [Bonus: hints of Corrosion of Conformity are present, too.]
