REVIEW: Svartsyn - Timeless Reign Carnal Records, 2007
8/10
Svartsyn - Timeless Reign - cover art Once the “play” button is pressed when a Svartsyn album is in the stereo, you know hell's gonna be unleashed the blackened way. These Swedes are again at the stake with this their brand new opus and of course this is great news for this defiled world we live in. Albeit the ushering of Timeless Reign it's a cold and eerie intro à la Tenhi, the trademark mass destruction metal takes off a few moments later and won't stop until the end. Massive guitar sound, unrelenting drums, unfriendly melodies, a thick bass sound -- these are the soldiers marching out as one, wielding darkness as weapon. The tremendously solid style of this band is what makes them standout from the rest. This time the guitar arrangements seem slightly more melodic at times, for instance those two note patterns and riffs in "Sanctus Satanas;" however, the ultra-massive rhythm section based on obscure harmonies and a certain grim, everflowing murmur feeling gets the balance as it takes. Svartsyn's most outstanding highlight is probably the background grim harmony created by bass and drums; chasm-like vocals also help out for that duty. No significant changes with previous releases, except for some evolution in the guitar sound and production in general. The spirit lives on; it's great to see bands like this, still delivering high quality black metal without giving in to trends and not becoming self-parodies. Sure some of you may think these words are cheap journalist bullshit and verbal masturbations; if so, you probably don't know Svartsyn and you don't know what black metal is about. Darkness will always have a solemn soundtrack with bands like these. Forever.
