The Norwegian band
Sweet Mother Of God was formed back in 1998 by guitarist Frode Petterson and
the original Conception vocalist Dag Østby. The music presented on this
disc has little to do with the power / heavy metal of Conception though.
Instead they have decided to follow the trends of today and play gothic doom
metal in the vein of many other Norwegian bands such as Trail Of Tears and
Theatre Of Tragedy. This album is however less doomy, more gothic, more
melodic and more up-beat than most of the other bands in the genre. Following
trends just for the sake of following trends is something I generally despise
but that doesn't mean that I can't enjoy music because of the fact that it
sounds like some other band. If this would be the case I would automatically
be as naive and ignorant as the followers of trends. Even though Sweet Mother
Of God have found a sound of their own they have stolen the intro riff in
"The Succubus" straight off from Dark Tranquillity. Some of you probably
think that there are already enough bands in this genre but I must say that I
truthfully enjoy what they have done with this debut mini album of their's.
In fact, Sweet Mother Of God doesn't sound like any of their Norwegian
countrymen. Instead the music on this album reminds me a lot more of Devlin,
the solo project of Siebenbürgen mastermind Marcus Ehlin. They are not a
complete copy of each other but the general sound is very similar with more
straightforward heavy metal riffs, clean high quality female vocals,
semi-clean growling vocals done just as well and on top of this a very gothic
coloring. This is what sells today and despite what people tell you there are
not that many good bands in this genre yet but Sweet Mother Of God is
definitely one of them.
