REVIEW: Sworn - Visionary Control Self-financed, 2005
7/10
Sworn - Visionary Control - cover art Sworn is a very young Danish metal act that formed in 2003 but they have already recorded this full-length album completely on their own. Apparently the band members are very serious about their art as this recording has virtually the sound quality of a professional label release. Hard work and money has been invested into this and that I appreciate very much. Musically Sworn occupy the border between progressive and power metal, building songs with both unusual time changes, nice melodies and aggressive metal riffs. To be honest the band members are higher skilled instrumentalists than they are song writers but they have still done a good job with this album. Vocalist Anders Vyberg was a very strong asset for the band and it's a shame that he has recently parted with Sworn. Hopefully they will find a skilled frontman who can fill his shows. My favorite pick off the album is probably "Fear Spawning Anger" which is a song that has just about everything - almost Dream Theater sounding guitar work, a simple yet beautiful melody and creative vocals from Vyberg. Even though there are power metal influences clearly present in the music of Sworn, there are no high-pitched Hammerfall vocals here. Sworn is definitely one of the most impressive unsigned bands I have heard lately. Good job!
