An artist whose album you can instantly recognize and not mistake for any other band is in general much more successful in my book than the zillions of clones available today. Despite the religious overtones that surround them I have been a fan of their ambitious musical concept for some time now even though I don't think they have produced a whole album as strong as some other acts in the progressive field such as Dream Theater and Kamelot (yes, I know they are not quite as progressive according to many of you). With "Paradise Lost" the Americans have finally reached the level of perfection they have sought after for so long. Not only is it the heaviest and most modern sounding album in their career so far, it summarizes every single Symphony X element the old fans have come to love and takes every aspect of their sound one step further. The vocals of Russel Allen (sorry but I can't bring myself to using "Sir" despiting dwelling in nobility's genealogy myself once in a while) are more impressive than ever before, the song writing is more diverse than on previous releases without sacrificing the characteristics of Symphony X and the production is as close to perfect as possible.
"Paradise Lost" is a concept album and perhaps that is what makes it such a coherent and diverse release at the same time. The listener is invited to travel through a wide range of atmospheres and emotions as he / she experiences one of the richest musical tapestries of 2007. I have enjoyed the band since I heard their 1998 album "Twilight In Olympus" but I have never been as impressive with them as I am now. Symphony X now definitely deserves to be mentioned in the same sentence as Dream Theater and I am already eagerly awaiting their next album.
