Mr. Ulvedin the sole musician in (Black Metal) "band"
Taake, expresses
himself with lyrics mostly formulated in old Norwegian verse
patterns,
or so
we are told. Of course probably not even the Norwegian fans
won't be
able to
tell what the hell he is singing about, because the
vocals are your
typical
black metal "aaaaaaaaargh, uaaaaaaaarggggh" type
of screams that we all
have
come to appreciate and love by now. (Guh, guh!)
He is also using every
Black
Metal cliché in the book (crude production
that is devoid of synths but
also
some traditional folky bits, etc). The
press release also mentions
something
about members spending time in jail.
(Of course I cannot tell if that
is
really true -I thought that he never
had so many band members around-
but
boy, oh boy, yet more Norwegian
clichés on offer here!). This guy used
the
moniker of THULE before (and
released two demos), before changing to
TAAKE.
With that name he recorded a
demo ("Manndaudsvinter" 1995) and a 7" EP
("Koldbrann I Jesu Marg" 1996
on his own Mosegrodd Prod.). "
Nattestid." was
the first full-length
album to be released in Wounded Love Records, the
label that is now releasing
his second album. Mr. Ulvedin -most
probably-
feels that the Black Metal
genre has degenerated with "evolving" bands
that
stray from the original
B.M sound / feel and that it should go back and
find
it's roots again.
Well, the 7 tracks on offer definitely point out to
that
direction. I have
to say that the ending of the 4 th song (4'20" to
6'30")
sounded very
impressive to me (that riff is really good), but the
highlight
has got to
be the totally funny effect that he is using -all the time-
in
the previous
song! Why he has chosen to do that repeatedly, only
Satan -probably- knows.
To his credit one cannot just find blast beats
and
fast and aggressive
parts. There are also some slower and folky parts
that
make the album sound
more interesting.
