“Hordalands Doedskvad” is the full title of this album by Norsk band Taake. And it starts with a voice yelling “Helnorsk Svart Metall”, a grand declaration of a will, sure! Infernal Norwegian Black Metal, hmmmm, yes, it could work to describe the music played by Hoest and co. Again Taake are showing some of their classic weapons: lyrics put down in runes on the booklet (of course in Norwegian), typical black metal imagery with a slight different twist in Hoest´s face make-up and the hazy numb cover art, and above all things, their black metal strongly inspired by bands as Satyricon and Darkthrone. Just “strongly inspired”, for in this CD they keep on developing their brand of metal, conforming a style of their own. Somehow we could state Taake are holding the sceptre once carried by those bands, left astray when they fell from inspirational clouds. This act shows a great talent creating beautiful melodies and that´s their most remarkable trait. Avoiding to be cheesy, they manage to be melodic and entertaining albeit dark and grim black metal is the everflowing reference in their music. Highlights of the album could be the overwhelming last riff of the opening track, or 4th and 5th tracks. Anyway the whole “...Doedskvad” is very well done. Firmly nailed to the black metal soil, the listener can snatch some riffs à la Destruction and other thrashy blinks among the songs. Aggressive and melodic at the same time, these songs won´t disappoint fans of classic black metal bands and others devoid of melodic territories like Windir. By the way, the sound is clean, no raw 4-track porta sound here. I still think Taake is one of the few really interesting black metal bands, away from most of the kids nowadays trying to be true, evil and blah blah blah. Hear the death chant from Hordaland...
