This is the long awaited release of the old Taake material finally pressed on CD. Well, maybe most of people wasn´t looking forward to see it released, after all! But at least it´s my case since I´m a great follower of this band´s music. “Helnorsk Svartmetall” consists of all the stuff recorded by Taake prior to the mythic “Nattestid ser porten vid” album: the ´96 EP and the ´95 demo released as Taake, but also the two demos recorded by the pre-Taake band Thule, dating from ´93 and ´94. Reading this you can figure out what´s the picture: yes, stuff only for collectors and fans. If you don´t know Taake music, I´ll say they are one of the best black metal bands ever appeared without exaggerating at all. However, if you are interested in this group, I´m going to recommend you to check before their full-length albums, in order to create on you an accurate impression of what the music of these Norwegians is about. This is just for Taake maniacs, that typical release fearless of crappy sound, old material, 4-track recordings (or even less) and things like that. Anyway, this is not shit; some of the songs have an acceptable sound, of course quite necro, but audible enough for experienced and tortured ears like mine; on the other hand, the Taake´s ´95 demo “Manndaudsvinter” is pure noise (in fact it´s a rehearsal). Besides that, the songs are not the best music on Earth, definitely, obviously the style was still maturing then. But as a curiosity the fans will surely find here and there some interesting tiny jewels and some good riffs as well. Honestly, I´ve been surprised by the Thule songs that are better than I expected, in sound and quality, without reaching spectacular heights. Concluding: are you fond of Taake´s cold, grim and bewitching black metal? If so, you might be interested in this CD. If not, check the albums before if you want to know this band.
