REVIEW: Tangent, The - A Place In The Queue InsideOut Music, 2006
7/10
Tangent, The - A Place In The Queue - cover art "A Place In The Queue" is the third full-length album from the progressive rock outfit The Tangent, a bi-national project created by British and Swedish musicians who are renowned in the field of progressive rock. Spearheaded once again by vocalist and main songwriter Andy Tillison, there are some changes in the line-up this time around since Roine Stolt is no longer with the band. This has apparently offered the band more freedom to explore other aspects and on this album more wind instruments have come into use. Theo Travis handles not only the saxophone but also flutes and a clarinet. Two 20+ minutes songs and a total running time of 79 minutes testifies of the ambitious and pretentious nature of this release but dealing with progressive music in general is often an ambitious task in itself. Solid and well structured song writing and the instrumental work from world-class musicians lay the foundation for a not even close to predictable album. Whether you are in for a piece of 70s nostalgia á la Yes or The Flowerkings or a fan of the group's previous two critically acclaimed releases, you will most likely enjoy what The Tangent is doing anno 2006. The special edition comes with a bonus disc with three quarters of an hour's worth of material that was originally written for the album but didn't fit the overall concept.
