REVIEW: Tarantula - Metalmorphosis AFM Records, 2005
7.5/10
Tarantula - Metalmorphosis - cover art If most people know the Portuguese metal scene mainly through the dark gothic tales of Moonspell then you will from now on know of a much older band called Tarantula. Musically they do not have that much in common with Fernando Ribeiro and his vampire friends but they have been around since forever, or more accurately 1981, and must be considered as one of the most important Portguese bands ever. Even though they had already been active for close to 20 years, they did not really become known on an international level until they signed with the German label AFM Records and released "Light Beyond The Dark" in the year 2000. "Metalmorphosis" will not surprise anyone who is already familiar with the band. Musically it is firmly rooted in the 80s Whitesnake tradition but with a slightly heavier modern power metal vibe. Ranging from soft, romantic songs to heavier straight-forward hard rock riffing, Tarantula does not stand still but focus hard on diverse and intelligent song writing, coupled with excellent melodies and solid vocals - all of it completed with a crystal clear production. If Moonspell represents the fiery passion and darkly erotic then Tarantula represents warmth and romance even though the guitar work can be rather aggressive at times, leaning towards the American school of power metal. A fine, solid mix of 80s hard rock and modern melodic metal.
