Talk about a pithy and apropos name for a record! Here we have a quite talented batch of Germans logging their collective influences on tape (er, hard drive) for the first time, so the listener is presented with a succession of ideas mostly within the modern melodic realm: Shadows Fall, Arch Enemy, you name it. The ersatz fragmentation resides in the disjointed, see-what-sticks approach to songwriting. Some melodic guitar licks are sweet as honey, others just reek of saccharine overload. Some clean vocals work, others are woefully out of tune ala your favorite (!) emo or metalcore band; yea and verily, words cannot express how terrible the singing on “Unforgiving as the Sea” is. There’s a black metal lick here, a gangstyle chorus there, a needless chug riff where it needn’t be, et al. Reverb vocals, tasteful acoustic picking, garbage lyrics all lead to one critical summation: a highly mixed bag that exudes potential but could stand some more emphasis of substance over flash. Work on the songs, learn to sing or else quit trying, stop trying to be all things to all people, and consult me again in a year.
