REVIEW: Temptamentum - Disciples Of The Ashen Sun Self-financed, 2003
7.5/10
Temptamentum - Disciples Of The Ashen Sun - cover art When I heard the phrase "melodic death metal" I instantly thought of At The Gates and such. Putting on the first track I realized that this was not the case. Temptamentum mixes in a lot more black metal, and the melodic bits are based more on keyboards than guitar. But who cares? After an impressive intro (wich is actually, in my opinion, the best part of this cd) the excitement wears of. I mean, this is a really good album, but it lacks something, and even I am not quite sure what it is. Maybe it's about variation. After listening to the cd for a while I tend to lose focus and start doing other things. That is never a good sign. I simply think that the songs are repeating themselves. Maybe a little more variation in the drums and the singing would help. Just a little, because honestly, overall there's really not much to complain about. The mixing is absolutely perfect, and the artwork suits the atmosphere on the cd just fine. It's clear that these guys are on to something. Something great! They just need to have the guts to develop it some more. Experiment a little bit, and make everything a little more unpredictable. And maybe stop being so pretentious. The lyrics are (as usual in death and black) a little exaggerated. It doesn't have to be so heavy. So diffuse and unclear, you don't gain much if the listener doesn't understand what it is you're saying. I prefer lyrics that are easy to comprehend, a little bit raw, but with an atmosphere and a true emotion behind them. And I'm not very fond of theme albums, such as this. I was told that the lyrics are based on John Milton's epos "Paradise Lost". I haven't read it myself but it tends to get a little bit tiresome. But that's my opinion, and right now I'm just trying to find more things to complain about where there are none, so I'm just going to stop. This is a good album. Try to experiment some more and you will conquer the world. As for the listeners out there, this is definitely worth buying. It doesn't really cost much: 10-12 Euros depending on where in the world you live. So in conclusion, visit the band's homepage and order the cd. That's all for now, and I hope I get to hear some more from this melodic death metal band, that for once doesn't sound the slightest like the melodic death I'm used to. Good work!
