Winter is the new release of Colombian legends Tenebrarum whom over the years have managed to build a strong fan base, specially in their homeland, and a status as a band that will always bring something fresh in every release, and Winter is not the exception to these expectations. After several years in the scene, and many albums in their music history, in which they have shown an interest towards experimentation with several aspects of their personalities and new musical paths to express themselves, we find in Winter a band that seems to have found the identity they have been seeking throughout the years, and can be best defined as a compendium of all their musical influences and faces. Although Winter feels like an album that tries to keep the goth influence in their music and presents a much stronger addition of styles that might seem alien to metal purists, the band manages to keep the metal essence of their music putting together the experience and influences compiled over more than 15 years of their career. Winter is a fresh and well crafted album that dwells in different human emotions, and Tenebrarum has managed to successfully translate these into their music thus offering a very eclectic album which can range from mellow tracks such as "My Relief" to more aggressive offerings like "Panzer Division" which happens to be my favorite song on the album. For Winter, the band has included two songs in Spanish, one of which is a cover of Estados Alterados, a band that was very important in the 80's Colombian rock scene. Compared to Voices, their previous album, the band has opted for cleaner vocals courtesy of their new vocalist, accompanied by the growls of Juan Carlos Henao who was in charge of the vocals before, as well as a stronger presence of keyboards along with the inclusion of female vocals in the background of a few songs. The violin is still the main storyteller of Tenebrarum's music and the proficiency of David Rivera--founding member--with the instrument is outstanding and sets the mood for every song's personality remaining as the band's trademark which has made them unique. Those familiar with their music know what I mean. Winter is by far the best album in Tenebrarum's musical career and the perfect stepping stone for them to be recognized as one of the most important, innovative and original bands in the Latin American music scene.
