REVIEW: Tenebre - Hearts Blood Regain Records, 2005
7/10
Tenebre - Hearts Blood - cover art It's not every day you're reviewing old school goth. Goth doesn't really say much any more, but this is 80's-sounding pop-goth of the Sisters of Mercy kind. This means that it's simple, to some perhaps boring, but still possibly appealing to a mainstream audience (perhaps you've seen the video to "Mistress of the dark"? At least I have, on Swedish music channel ZTV). Vocalist Kalle does a neat job getting that ol' gothy feeling, but in the long run it's quite unstimulating to listen to the monotony of his vocals. I'm sure the man could increase his vocal range, and be a little more creative. On the title track Kalle finds some Danzig punch in his singing, and it works. Songwise the album is solid but the peaks are few and the variation limited. They have a good thing going, but this album is not strong enough to reach the really high grades, at least from me. If you're into 80's goth this is a good album and it won't let you down, but they have a few more steps to take before achieving greatness. For their next album I hope for more variation, both vocally and musically.
