In situations like these I sometimes really think that I should improve my Finnish-skills to understand more of the lyrics written in Finnish.
I'm talking about a band hailing from Tampere called Teräsbetoni which is quite new in the scene, but already pretty successful in Finland. They just have released one single called 'Taivas Lyö Tulta' (Heaven spews fire) and it went directly to #1 in the official Finnish single-charts and stayed there for 3 weeks.
I first heard about them shortly before 'Taivas Lyö Tulta' was released and after I got the chance to listen to it I was more than positively surprised. Teräsbetoni play folkish-influenced power metal with catchy sing-along choruses, driving guitar-riffs and great melodies. What can I say? When I say catchy, I 'mean' catchy since this was the first thing I realized while listening to this single. Even though it contains only two songs, the title-track "Taivas Lyö Tulta" and "Pyhä Maa" (Holy Land), you cannot get them out of your head once you started listening to them, no matter whether you understand the lyrics or not. Consequently I can understand very well why this single had such a high chart-entry. Another significant part of Teräsbetoni are the vocals. You might know one of the two vocalists, Jarkko Ahola, who also joined Dreamtale in autumn 2004 as a new singer. Usually it doesn't happen too often that there's a band with two vocalists, but in this case both harmonize perfectly and add a special atmosphere to their songs.
Of course you somehow have to compare them a bit to Manowar due to their image and probably the lyrics resemble to Manowar's as well, but as I'm not such a big Manowar-fan and don't understand the lyrics I will leave this comment out ;).
It is really too bad that bands with Finnish lyrics are so unknown outside Finland. In my opinion Teräsbetoni have a great potential and I cannot wait to get my hands on their debut-album 'Metallitotuus' which will be released soon.
