REVIEW: Teratism - Ex Infernus (EP) Root Of All Evil Records, 2002
6/10
Teratism - Ex Infernus (EP) - cover art Teratism hails from the US and was given birth to by a gathering of musicians who had previously played with acts such as Anal Blast, Lorde Of All Desires, Mourning, Pentagoria and Theatre Of The Macabre. After recording a couple of demos they attracted attention from Root Of All Evil Records who decided to sign them. Their debut EP "Ex Infernus" contains only three songs (and a live version of one of them) which is a pity because it is hard to make an overall impression of the band from so little material. However it is easy to notice that they have found inspiration in the raw, brutal and primal sounds of Northern Europe from the time when death metal was turning black metal thanks to bands like Mayhem and Darkthrone. You will perhaps be a little surprised when sitting down to listen to this album though if you have hear the devilish noise from Darkthrone in your head because it starts off with a sacral choir intro that could as well have been taken from the debut album of Tristania. Then the real Teratism comes alive with a chaotic track called "Resurrection Denied". This is the worst song of this mini album though but the live version actually sounds more ferocious and vivid. The two tracks inbetween are quite similar in style with somewhat minimalistic black metal that should give a nice listen for all fans of cold northern black metal with tortured vocals. This is an anti-christian black metal assault that should please those of you who enjoy both old Morbid Angel and Darkthrone. It does however not introduce anything even remotely innovative to the world.
