REVIEW: Terrorizer - Darker Days Ahead Century Media, 2006
6.5/10
Terrorizer - Darker Days Ahead - cover art For the most part nostalgia will be omitted from this review. History, however, is in order. No one can deny the significance of Terrorizer's 1989 release World Downfall or that the band's lineup of 50% Morbid Angel and 50% Nausea members (including a future Napalm Death member) was monumental in and of itself. That all was short lived and only one proper release existed made it all the more magical. Why then "reunite" some 17 years later? Maybe because Jesse Pintado is no longer a part of Napalm Death and had too much free time on his hands. Maybe a sentiment of reunion coming from David Vincent returning to Morbid Angel clouds Pete Sandoval's thoughts. Whatever the case, a new Terrorizer record is here, even if only 50% of the original band are present. Current Morbid Angel guitarist Tony Norman (ex-Monstrosity) plays both 6 and 4 stringers here and relative newcomer vocalist Anthony Rezhawk does his best Frank Mullen (he's from Suffocation, boys and girls) impression for the kiddies.

Instead of blistering Grindcore flailing away the ears of listeners, mostly mid-paced Death Metal with flashes of Grind abounds. Darker Days Ahead actually sounds more like early Suffocation sleepwalking through excessive production while Repulsion bangs away in the background. Said production comes courtesy of Juan “Punchy” Gonzalez’ Diet of Worms Studios and the drumming instantly and necessarily recalls Sandoval's overly triggered sound. At least he likes it, right? Nostalgists will either rejoice or be wary as "Dead Shall Rise" has been resurrected here. Again, one must ask "why?" Little will stick to your ribs though this is not an entirely unsatisfying slab of Metal. The outro is another of Sandoval's segue/outro bits used as an excuse for a track -- see Morbid Angel. [Rumors of "classical piano parts" can be found here and "chants" are on the intro track, though no "13 minute track" appears.] Perhaps Nasum's Anders Jakobson was right to be "very worried" about this release as it might tarnish the legacy of Terrorizer.
