REVIEW: Testament - Souls Of Black Atlantic Records, 1990
9/10
Testament - Souls Of Black - cover art Testament is the band that shows what Megadeth would have sounded like today if they would have continued in the same vein as they started out in but as we all know (fortunately or unfortunately?) they didn't. I don't know if I fancy Testament quite as much as Megadeth but it is a close call. "Souls Of Black" is by many considered to be the best album by the band and it sure is a good one. The thrash metal scene started out in California in the 80's and Testament are one of the best bands to rise above the hundreds of others existing on and off at that time. Other bands who have emerged from this area are well-known acts such as Megadeth, Vio-lence, Forbidden and Machine Head. Testament are out of a purely musical point of view one of the best thrash metal bands ever but I have a problem with the singer. I don't know what it is but his voice has a peculiar ability to annoy me while the music itself is exceptionally good. This is still one of the most important albums in the history of thrash metal and my favorite Testament song ever, "Face In The Sky" can be found here as well. If you like the early Megadeth albums this is something you would not want to miss out on since the production is much better and the riffing is more varied.
