REVIEW: The Abominable Iron Sloth - The Abominable Iron Sloth Goodfellow Records, 2006
8.5/10
The Abominable Iron Sloth - The Abominable Iron Sloth - cover art Easily appealing to the masses of Eyehategod addicts out there, The Abominable Iron Sloth deliver a brand of bludgeoning sludge that creeps and crawls along like a molten lead slug on speed. That is to say at any minute this thing could fall apart -- and that's a major part of the excitement. Vocals are primarily of the higher pitched Hardcore bark and the music is a down-tuned mass of mid-paced chug filled out by some NOLA-inspired grooves. This pairing works well and there are no sonic surprises here as everything drowns within this deep well. The song titles are worth the price of admission alone. Just look at "Parasite Hilton and Other Flaws Inherent to Wealth" to get an idea of what these guys, some hailing from Will Haven and Oddman, have in mind. The album liner "comic book" giving the history of The Abominable Iron Sloth myth is fantastically original, too. That this slab runs a paltry ~27 minutes long could be something to complain about, but this is a very potent dose and much more might kill. If you think Sacramento, California only has the woeful Deftones to offer, think again. The Abominable Iron Sloth will crush you into submission and that is the point. Hopefully Will Haven getting back together and touring won't affect this outfit's brand of madness.
