Boxriff is considered an EP by The Atomic Bitchwax, what with only 4 new songs offered, though this quartet is padded with quite a killer amount of filler. We're talkin' a complete live set available both on CD and as a separate DVD. Way to go Meteor City (Jadd!) and crew. Between the time of the last recording, 3, and this one, TAB experienced a major lineup change. Founding guitarist Ed Mundell quit to concentrate on his main band, Monster Magnet. He has been more than ably replaced by former Core frontman Finn Ryan (guitar, vocals) and now the Bitchwax can tour like the remaining original members had always wanted. The band previously played mainly instrumental Stoner Rock, though now they've a(nother) proper vocalist and seem to have shed their limited vocals stance. The new songs all feature vocals though the outer space, fast cars, and loose women aesthetic of previous records has been maintained. Lyrics were not provided but the vocals are easily discernible and the song titles indicate an interesting blend of what could happen on the road or even to you. The new songs are solid and at times recall the Smashing Pumpkins (the guitar tone and even some vocals on "Kiss the Sun" invoke Siamese Dream). The live material is quite good, sound quality wise, and certainly musically speaking. If you don't mind that the spacy Stoner Rock vibe has been co-opted with a major Rock presence a la the Foo Fighters, give The Atomic Bitchwax another listen. The live material may be worth the price of admission alone.
