REVIEW: The Berzerker - Dissimulate Earache Records, 2002
10/10
The Berzerker - Dissimulate - cover art A few years ago all I ever knew about The Berzerker was that they wore rubber masks and had a banned music video that could cause an epileptic seizure. That wasn’t enough for me to check out the band though. Sure the masks are cool, but Slipknot was just hitting the mainstream, and I didn’t care. Then one day last year I bought a ticket to see Vader and Origin in Montreal Canada. I checked out the band line-up for the show, and noticed that The Berzerker and Immolation were also going to play that show. Now I was forced to listen to The Berzerker. I went to their website, and read about the band. What intrigued me most was the mention of the distorted 909 kick drums. I went to the concert in Montreal, and The Berzerker stole the show!! The ragging wall of sound in which The Berzerker blasted out was insane. A combination of noise that I have never heard mixed together. The Berzerker pound out a sound that almost sounds synthetic. Like a machine that destroys everything it meets. In this case your hearing. The best description I can give is Industrial/grind/techno. Amazing. So I bought “Dissimulate”, The Berzerker’s second album with Earache Records. I’ve never enjoyed techno too much, but added with Death metal growls, blistering grind riffing/drumming, it’s an unmatched combination. That distorted 909-kick drum pedal is fucked. The dual vocal attack rips through some of the most extreme music I’ve ever heard. The drummer is insanely fast. While the overall sound of The Berzerker is ragging you can find yourself at times tranced by their rhythm. Only Brutal Truth’s “Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Responses” can match the drum tempo of The Berzerker. If you have any doubts about The Berzerker, check out these tracks: Death Reveals, Betrayal, Last Mistake, Paradox, No One Wins, and Disregard. Believe me, The Berzerker is an experience you don’t want to ignore. As for the rest of the concert that night in Montreal; Origin fucking ripped. Vader no showed, because “they didn’t get the paper work in on time”. Fuckers!! Immolation headlined, giving a performance worthy for Satan himself. But it was The Berzerker who killed on that evening. Oh, the pictures through out the booklet for Dissimulate are pretty cool too.
