REVIEW: The Chasm - The Spell Of Retribution Wicked World, 2005
8.5/10
The Chasm - The Spell Of Retribution - cover art Decades of non-stop metal delivering and struggling have already paid off for Mexican veterans of death The Chasm, who, way back pulled further the Death Metal scene in their homeland through previous relevant acts such as Cenotaph and Shub-Niggurath before embarking into a journey to build a strong underground following that would eventually result in The Chasm becoming what underground purists call a “cult” band. It has been 13 years and 7 albums including the latter, The Spell of Retribution, released by Earache Records’ sub label Wicked World, and the band now seems readier than ever to confront the world with their anthems of death, myths and epic “Heavy Metal of Death”. The Spell… is a tighter and more mature effort when compared to the band’s previous releases, still I miss the high-pitched screams I got so used to in early releases like in “From the Lost Years”. Given the long trajectory of these musicians and their strong adherence to the early sounds spawned by metal legends around the world it is obvious to find many of those influences intertwined in The Spell… as they have been doing since the beginning but the interesting part is that contrary to what so many “retro” acts have been doing, The Chasm goes beyond those influences, injecting their own personality to these sounds which makes them unique.

Another important fact is that although claiming to pay tribute to “the roots”, it doesn’t mean their music sounds “old” or outdated, on the contrary, past and present collide contributing to their uniqueness, and this nova et vetera characteristic added to the eclectic atmosphere in their music and sound makes the experience of discovering The Spell of Retribution an even more enjoyable one. The songs are an average of seven minutes long, so as you might expect, it requires a lot of moods and creative capabilities to keep you hooked along such a long ride, meaning that every song has its own personality and atmospheres, and here is when you discover how versatile The Chasm can be, taking you from a very grim Doom like atmosphere to a more fast paced, rawer and angrier passage; they can be aggressive, dark, sad, epic and more at once, they can be very basic and raw and be progressive as well, they let themselves flow with the songs and like a chameleon, they adapt to what the song requires to keep flowing smoothly with what it requires thus keeping the aura of the song intact. So if you are in the urge for versatility and well-elaborated old school feeling The Chasm must definitely be in the top or your priorities.
