With members of Soilwork and Darkane, the Defaced would be expected to deliver melodic metal of the highest caliber. Karma in Black certainly delivers on that promise with ten tracks of pure metal goodness, which has been categorized as “groove-thrash” by some and “thrash-death” by others.
The Defaced juxtapose thrash and melody without becoming redundant or sliding into cheesiness. Almost staggered riffing and drumming gives the music a definite groove. At the same time, it keeps the songs heavy. The vocals, both sung and shouted, are mostly gruff, but sometimes a cleaner singing voice is used. The one place they don’t go is into the guttural range of some death metal vocalists.
“Once in Between” is truly the standout track of this album. The heavy groove of the verse and the aggressive vocals will make you bang your head, or at least sway it in time to the music. The chorus, which uses melody to lament lost purpose, is at once both melancholy and refreshing.
The next time you’re looking for an energetic metal fix, check out the Defaced. Karma in Black is a truly engaging, melodic album that will hold your interest for its entire forty minutes.
