REVIEW: The Defaced - Karma In Black Nuclear Blast, 2003
5.5/10
The Defaced - Karma In Black - cover art This album is the equivalent to those fights you see where things start off well with lots of fists and blood, but fall into a lull shortly thereafter. You know that what is taking place takes some skill, and question whether or not you could do better yourself while you watch the combatants awkwardly search for a new rout to take in their attack. Frustrated, your mind wanders while the minutes tick away. Should you do something else? You eventually sum it up by saying that it's better than most alternatives. But, is this really what you should be saying about a metal album? Where is the aggression, the ferocity and the bloodlust? The Defaced get pretty radio-friendly at times, even laying out what could essentially be an 80's ballad in "!0 vs 9". Undoubtedly, they can play their instruments, but seem to be missing elements which lay the very foundations of metal. [Editor's comment: This album was released in Europe through the Italian label Scarlet Records.]
