In order to have a constant group of musicians to work with on his solo outings, Devin Townsend gathered the Devin Townsend Band together. This is very different from the intense extreme metal and provocative lyrics of Strapping Young Lad. Instead "Synchestra" offers us an epic musical journey with much richer textures where the limitations are none and experimentation is everything. Despite the release via progressive specialists InsideOut, this album is not completely devoid of the industrial elements or aggressive vocals of Strapping Young Lad but here they are exceptions and not rules. If you want your music predictable and straight-forward then "Synchestra" is not for you. However, if you are open to new influences and prefer to move forward instead of standing still then you should appreciate the well crafted piece of audial art presented by a man who has been one of the leading metal icons of the North American continent for many years. "Synchestra" also features a guest appearance from none other than Devin's old mentor, the guitar legend Steve Vai, with whom he actually toured as a 19-year old. Beautiful, epic and upbeat, this is a bright and joyful album. I still feel that SYL is the best representation of Devin Townsend but this is definitely solid and interesting material.
