REVIEW: The Dillinger Escape Plan - Irony Is A Dead Scene Epitaph Records, 2002
8.5/10
The Dillinger Escape Plan - Irony Is A Dead Scene - cover art For those who missed seeing Dillinger Escape Plan perform live with Mike Patton on stage, then enjoy this four song EP. Dillinger Escape Plan (DEP) have grown quite popular here in North America, and are blamed for destroying people’s ears with their fusion of jazz / hardcore / metal. There are many bands that play in the same vein as these New Jersey lads, but no one matches the intensity, intelligence, and creativity that Dillinger Escape Plan do. They simply put everyone else to shame who try to imitate them. What could they possibly do now to invoke uncovered territory?? The question has been asked, could they record something new and fresh which wouldn’t sound too familiar?? The answer: MIKE PATTON on vocals. The combination of Mike Patton and Dillinger Escape Plan is a match made in a fucked up world. Lucky for us, that world is our world. “Irony is a Dead Scene” is an explosive recording that covers much ground. At times this EP has the trademark Dillinger Escape Plan math-metal sound that Mike Patton tackles with no problem, and on the other hand Mike Patton brings his creative mastery in the sound of Mr. Bungle, and the Fantomas, which DEP has no problem playing. Mike Patton’s vocal delivery is mental but very mature, while being extremely ferocious. The intelligence of Mike Patton cannot be denied. He gives Dillinger Escape Plan an added credibility to their name. Too bad it isn’t on a full time basis. I recommend all four songs on this short EP, although “When Good Dogs do bad Things” is the standout for me. It’s absolutely frantic, but then reaches a level of insanity to only fall into an eerie yet tranquil mood. Am I making sense here?? Probably not. Not until you listen to this EP for yourself will you get an idea of the noise that is made in these four songs. These two identities are very different and hard to describe, yet they manage to mix many styles together, which could not be equaled by any other musical outfits. The EP is finished with a cover of Aphex Twin’s “Come to Daddy”, which is brilliant. Overall this EP is very clever. Maybe if it were longer it would loose its novelty. Irony is a Dead Scene is the perfect length to keep you wanting more. As an added bonus the cd comes with a short video to give insight to the recording process of the EP. Very cool if you want to see Mike Patton recording his vocals, and what he uses to distort his voice.
