Italy is a county that has certainly made a fair amount of contributions to metal over recent times. Although maybe not known for one metal genre in particular the country has been diverse enough to offer everything from melodic black metal (Graveworm) to outrageous power metal (Rhapsody of Fire). The Foreshadowing are a new act out of Rome who have recently signed to Candlelight Records and have released their debut album Days Of Nothing.
The Candlelight Records bio on The Foreshadowing states that the band may draw comparisons to early Paradise Lost, Anathema, and latter day My Dying Bride. More than any of those bands though, Days Of Nothing really reminds me of Katatonia and in particular, the Katatonia records from the late 90's and early 2000's. Obviously inspired by all that is melancholy, The Foreshadowing have channeled their sadness into an atmospheric rock record focusing on dreary, melodic passages and subtle yet emotional vocals.
The vocals are definitely one of the strong points for this band as Marco Benevento's singing absolutely conveys a feeling of sheer hopelessness and dread. His performance on Days Of Nothing is impressive as it is engaging both lyrically and stylistically. The Foreshadowing may not be a heavy band in terms of crushing guitar riffs or pounding drums (in fact there are few moments on this whole album where headbanging may ensue), however the band's ability to bring out emotions of utter dejection and devastation is impressive. In fact, it could be said that this is not the music that plays in the background when you have lost a loved one but rather the music that plays when you think about how devastated you are from that loss. The Katatonia-like guitar melodies and atmospheric passages throughout the record tend to mesh well with the vocals. Overall the songwriting may not be up to par with the bands previously mentioned, however tunes such as the chilling opener “Cold Waste” or the epic title track would fit right in with any moment of depression.
All in all Days Of Nothing is a satisfying yet unspectacular listen. The band does show a good amount of promise on here and while this record will probably never achieve mass appeal, it will positively appeal to fans of Katatonia, My Dying Bride and other doom bands who put an extra emphasis on sadness in their music.
