REVIEW: The Forsaken - Arts Of Desolation Century Media, 2002
8.5/10
The Forsaken - Arts Of Desolation - cover art The Forsaken struck the whole metal community with surprise as they released their debut album "Manifest Of Hate" on Century Media last year. Now the Swedes are back again with their second output and just like its predecessor it is full of raging intensity from start to end. The Forsaken have mixed the brutality of US death metal bands with a very high level of technicality and intelligent song writing that we know from bands like Slayer, At The Gates and The Haunted. There are no real hit songs on this album as there were on the debut but on the other hand the overall quality is just as high as it was then. The only track that I am not too fond of is "Dethroned" where they sound a little too much like Morbid Angel, a sound not really suited for them. Sweden has brought the world several new big names in extreme metal the last five or so years like The Haunted, Soilwork, Darkane and The Forsaken. What is strange about these bands is that the three last mentioned are all from around the town of Helsingborg which is in the south of Sweden. In fact I couldn't care less about where The Forsaken is from. The only thing that matters to me is that they have yet again proved their place in the elite of today's extreme metal. If you want a nice energy rush without any illegal activities involved I would definitely recommend this release and also the debut album from the band, two of the most exciting releases in Swedish metal so far in the 21st century. Well done, guys.
