REVIEW: The Gathering - Mandylion Century Media, 1995
8/10
The Gathering - Mandylion - cover art This album from the Dutch band The Gathering lives very much on the great voice of Anneka van Giersbergen who also wrote all lyrics. The music is not that spectacular although there are a couple of nice guitar riff in some of the songs. Other than that it seems like the music consists of a never-ending heavy ballad. The music needs some kind of action if it's not going to bore you after a couple of songs. On this album the same rhythm is repeated over an over again without much happening. As I said in the beginning the music is at least enlightened by Anneke's very nice voice. She is definitely one of the best vocalists in the metal world today. Without her voice this album would have been a little flat and I would probably not have given it this high grade. I guess this isn't my cup of tea (and I don't like tea...) but I really like the vocals. The album was recorded and mixed at Woodhouse Studios in Hagen, Germany, engineered by Siggi Bemm and Waldemar Sorychta (also involved in the Therion recordings). The band dedicated this album to a good friend who had passed away.
