REVIEW: The Gathering - Sleepy Buildings (A Semi-Acoustic Evening) Century Media, 2004
6/10
The Gathering - Sleepy Buildings (A Semi-Acoustic Evening) - cover art This album is as indicated by the title a live recording. The first thing one notices is that the sound quality is awesome. Another thing which is evident, if one did not know it already, is that the girl behind the microphone definitely can sing. One might wonder what happens when a gothic metal band, which like most bands in that genre rely on arrangements and a fat production, do a stripped down live recording? Does it sound like something by Celine Dion or what? In this case the answer is pretty much “yes”. It pretty much sounds like really beautiful elevator music. As mellow background music this record is very pleasant, but I think one has to be a true fan of The Gathering to grow lyrical about this album. The songs are simply not good enough to make a lasting impression without the additional arrangements, and the album melts into a blob of similar-sounding tunes. The vocals are indeed beautiful, but I think music has to be more than just pleasant. One must however consider that this indeed is an unplugged type album, and as such I do not think it is easy for any gothic band to do better. If this album was to be compared to goth in general, the grade would be a bit lower, but as a live album by a gothic band it impresses. If you are a fan of The Gathering this record is a must have. If you are a mainstreamy person who wants to hear a really impressive live act you should definitely check this album out as well. I still feel that this is background music, actively listening to the 73 minutes of this album is boring, and in my case induces overwhelming tiredness.
