REVIEW: The Great Deceiver - A Venom Well Designed Peaceville Records, 2002
7.5/10
The Great Deceiver - A Venom Well Designed - cover art Even though The Great Deceiver was named after an old King Crimson song their music does not have very much in common with the old progressive rock heroes. The Great Deceiver is the band that Tomas Lindberg formed when the close to legendary Swedish thrash metal band At The Gates broke up in 1996 due to inner tension and intense touring. The rest of the members are well-known musicians from the metal bands active on the Black Sun / Dolores label in the 90's such as Diabolique, Grotesque and Liers In Wait. Earlier this year the band became the first act to sign with Peaceville Records in 2002 since the label was very impressed with the result of their first real full-length album. The Great Deceiver is a band whose music is hard to categorize. They stand firmly rooted in Swedish hardcore but because of the backgrounds of the band members there is also a very strong metallic edge in their sound, sometimes almost darkly industrial in its nature. Together with weird melancholic melodies and the raw vocals from Lindberg, somewhat similar to his vocals with At The Gates, this makes for a very nice and pleasant listening experience. Generally I am not very fond of hardcore and punk music but The Great Deceiver find themselves lucky to have made an impression even a metal fanatic like me. This is perhaps the fresh air that the metal scene of today is in need of. Stand-out tracks: "Pierced", "Enter The Martyrs".
