REVIEW: The Great Deceiver - Terra Incognito Peaceville Records, 2004
8/10
The Great Deceiver - Terra Incognito - cover art "A Venom Well Designed" put The Great Deceiver on the heavy music map for good when it was released in 2002. As most of you probably already know this Swedish band is fronted by the former At The Gates vocalist Tomas Lindberg but this is much more back to the basics punk and hardcore influenced, a genre where Tomas feels very much at home. The band has been very well received in the press which is not surprising as this is some of the most creative and innovative forms of hardcore / metal hybridization that has ever been presented to the world. It is aggressive and violent but still well structured and with a strong touch of melancholy which was present already on the last recording. "Terra Incognito" is the logical progression from "A Venom Well Designed" and if you liked that album you know what you get this time as well. If you think that hardcore is generally too repetitive, chaotic and non-melodic then give The Great Deceiver a chance and you will not be disappointed. Intense and groovy. Just the kind of record you should put on to get into the right mood before heading off to a death metal gig. Nothing fancy but it gets you going.
