I'm not sure what's most impressive about The Great Kat: her technical prowess at playing stringed instruments, her ability to do damn near everything while her mouth is painfully agape, or her cleavage. It's probably the cleavage. Seriously. The Great Kat, née Katherine Thomas, is a fantastic player, as she will tell anyone who is near enough to hear, I s'pose. She graduated from the Juilliard School of Music (with honors!). I rather enjoy her takes on Classical pieces while I cringe at the thought of any of her original material -- since I got Beethoven on Speed in 1990 or so, actually. Anyhow, this DVD is largely a throwaway because there ain't much on it. You do the math with a running time under 15 minutes. She may be a virtuoso and one of the "Top 10 Fastest Shredders of All Time" according to Guitar One magazine (which is plastered everywhere with anything dealing with TGK), but she is largely without substance. I get the music when it's good, but much of this is just plain bad. The video footage is less than professional and the "musicians" appearing here are merely posing with instruments. The Great Kat looks like Twisted Sister's Dee Snider's, um, twisted sister right down to the makeup. If she weren't caught up in the whole image debacle of the late 80s, she might be able to turn some heads in a meaningful manner. She used to advertise that she was "damn cute." Somewhere beneath all the makeup and an image that would make Dani Filth blush, it might be true. Hopefully someone can see her real face in there. Maybe even her.
