REVIEW: The Great Kat - Rossinis Rape (EP) TPR Music, 2000
6.5/10
The Great Kat - Rossinis Rape (EP) - cover art The Great Kat, or Katherine Thomas as she is christened once upon a time, graduated from Juilliard and has won several scholarship and competions due to her skills in handling the violin. However she decided to play metal instead since she realized that the interest in classical music was minimal. She did not only start to play metal but also became obsessed with playing as fast as possible on both the guitar and violin in order to create a new style that she calls cyberspeed metal. This album proves that she has learned to play at a very high speed and with great skill indeed but it feels like she is wasting her talent since I am sure she could achieve something a lot more interesting than this. The two songs on this album that are transcribed versions of Rossini and Bozzini are actually rather nice and very well-done but the other two tracks that she has written herself are not that good. Screaming about castrating and sodomizing men doesn't really make it any better but that is all part of the extreme image she has created for herself. I don't know if it works though since it is a little too extreme for my taste. Bitch did the whole S&M thing a lot better in the 80's in my humble opinion. Still, The Great Kat shows an incredible amount of skill when it comes to playing the instruments and if you want your metal to be cyberspeed, gross, extreme and bombastic this might be something to at least check out because there is only one Kat in the world as she is very clear to point out in her often very naive and childish interviews...
