The Haunted have been proclaimed
by the metal community to be the “Saviors of Thrash metal” and also the “Next
Slayer”, those comparisons being both bold and very hard to live up to. With
their latest release “One Kill Wonder” The Haunted lives up to all comparisons
and expectations and even better, exceeds them. Recorded at Studio Fredman,
with the serial killer motif adorning the album cover and liner notes and an
instrumental intro, at first look and listen there are many similarities to
the last released “The Haunted Made Me Do It”. But the similarities stop
there. Although still containing a melodic presence the tracks on “One Kill
Wonder” are much more aggressive and less accessible. This is partially due to
the nullification of any clean vocals but let me guarantee that what the album
may lack in accessibililty it makes up for in sheer brutality and technical
ability. The Haunted sounds tighter knit and better than ever, with seamless
song structures and an added bonus, which is a second helping of instrumental
thrash metal served up under the name “Demon Eyes”. Although it seems
impossible with past song titles such as “The Hate Song”, the tracks on this
album are lyrically more aggressive also as shown on the tracks “Shithead” and
“D.O.A”. Marco Aro of course belts his painful vocals stronger than ever and
truthfully impresses me more on each release. The other member that impresses
me more and more is Per Moller Jensen, whose drum work is tighter, faster and
more precise each time I hear him play. I say this certainly taking nothing
away from the rest of the band members who are and always have been
consistently killer musicians.
