REVIEW: The Haunted - The Haunted Earache Records, 1998
10/10
The Haunted - The Haunted - cover art Debut albums as good as this one from Swedish The Haunted are not that common but when you look at the band´s lineup you realize that there was nothing else but the best to expect from these guys who are definitely no newcomers on the metal scene. Here we have both Björler brothers from the sadly defunct At The Gates, Patrik Jensen from Witchery, Seance and other "unknown" Swedish metal outfits, Adrian Erlandsson who is now in Cradle Of Filth and behind the voice we find Peter Dolving from Mary Beats Jane (now a solo pop artist on a Swedish label). On the debut release from this new act we find a lot of the old At The Gates sound but they have now taken it a step further with a heavier sound and much better production than five years ago. Fast, technical and extremely melodic thrash/death metal is the trademark of the Swedish scene and this is among the best to ever come from my country. You might want to complain about the overuse of words like fuck and fucking in the lyrics but you have to remember that The Haunted is not one of the most civilized bands... I am very glad that the Björler brothers didn´t leave the metal scene completely and a part of At The Gates is still alive within the brutal spiritual core of The Haunted. Without a doubt this is one of the best debut albums ever but as I said the band members are not exactly new to the scene.
