Oblivion's Candle by The Isosceles Project is the best album Dysrhythmia never recorded. Oops! It's reportedly an EP but at over 42 minutes, it's longer than many albums - at least those by a lot of Death and Black Metal bands, anyway. Back to the front, the sounds and style of Oblivion's Candle are similar to the aforementioned other band, particularly on the masterful Pretest, but the substance of the three Toronto madmen from The Isosceles Project is individual enough to warrant repeated listens. That instrumental Metal is not high on the list for many is truly a shame in cases like the current one because so much is offered. This particular strain of "no words needed" music runs roughshod and ramshackle through all kinds of sounds, but to simplify it Progressive, Jazz, and Thrash are the three main components, at least according to these ears.
The 14 minutes of opener "Doppleganger" seem like they could go on ad infinitum. But that's why they made the "repeat" function on most CD players (and music software), friend.... Eric Euler's guitar wizardry is nothing short of amazing. He rocks and rules while he rocks and rolls. Or something. Scott Tessier's bass provides more than just rhythm and low end, adding depth to the music. Just check out the opening of the title track (and that harmonizing at 3:25 in). And the third side of the triangle? Why, Justin Falzon drums like there is no morrow. Everywhere at once he never sounds out of control. Plainly put, this is an impressive offering, self-released and self-produced though it may be. At times ponderous or thunderous, but always wond(e)rous (for parallelism), Oblivion's Candle is worth the time. Wow. And this is just an EP.
Bonus points for dedicating the recording to Adrian "The Energizer" Bromley, who sadly passed away in late 2008.
