REVIEW: The Konsortium - Preproduction '08 self-released, 2008
8.5/10
The Konsortium - Preproduction '08 - cover art Even before the jackboot samples bring first track “Under the Black Flag” to a close, one can sense a militaristic vibe at work, with tremolo-picked black metal riffs harnessed to a sequence of martial snare drum hits. More of the same in followup tune “Gasmask Prince,” which has a backbeat that seems at once loose and regimented, with a thrashier but still black-as-pitch adjoining riff. Things get still weirder with third and fourth tracks “Decomposers” and “Onwards! Onwards!,” which utilize snobbish avant-garde chants like the best works of Ulver and Attila Csihar. Catch the drift thus far? Basically, a hint of Emperor, a whole lot of Ved Buens Ende and Khold, distilled late-period Satyricon, and more Thorns, Dødheimsgard and Keep of Kalessin than you can shake a stick at. Four tracks and that’s all she wrote. Conceptually, lyrically and musically, this band has arrived fully realized (or derived?), so it’s unsurprising that The Konsortium has already found itself a label champing at the bit to release its next one. Such industry-minded grist notwithstanding, this is well worth seeking, hearing and enjoying.
