The Kovenant is not the only band which changed its style after a few releases, but almost nobody predicted such a change would come after Nexus Polaris with its worldwide success. In Times Before The Light is the collection of The Kovenant's early demos and this release is the reissue of those demos. They had released these demos under the name of Covenant as their first album in 1997 and this automatically makes one compare and contrast this reissued album with the original release. However this review will not include such comparison and contrast, but what actually this album is, for good or bad. This reissue includes a great deal of Industrial and sometimes even techno influences in order to make it more accord with The Kovenant's new musical style. The album has a very clean production as it is expected, the choral background and some guitar riffs are quite interesting and the vocals have been softened a bit. On the negative side the drums are hardly heard and have been completely pushed to the background. There are also gothic touches to some tracks such as Vision of a Lost Kingdom and The Dark Conquest which adds to their beauty and makes this album surpass the genres of Black, Gothic and Industrial metal. The lyrics of the album are generally about Night, Darkness, and Winter; but the lyrics of the Vision of a Lost Kingdom are totally different and put forward some philosophical issues rather than Darkness and Winter. The last stanza is: Our world is like a black soul/In eternal search for immortality/But the soul is tired of searching..., which is quite outstanding among the other lyrics. Finally if you are looking for a black metal album, you have to go for the original one since this album will disappoint you, but if you want to get a good blackened gothic industrial album, definitely this album is for you.
