REVIEW: The Krushers - Omonimo Apocalisse 74, 2007
6.5/10
The Krushers - Omonimo - cover art Oh, the joyful cluelessness that is this record! A Sicilian band with a name that sounds like a punk group (or a 1950s greaser gang), playing a bizarre mishmash of death, thrash and black metal, produced as woefully slapdash as early grind. This thing reeks of ineptitude in manifold ways, from the illogical genre segues that I just mentioned, to a rhythm section that can barely keep up with the buzzing guitar, to the lyrics that switch from Italian to English and back again but are too incomprehensible to discern which is which anyhoo. Hell, they couldn’t even get the CD booklet right, since many songs’ lyrics were simply forgotten in the printing! Oh, the hilarity! You’d think that a band that’s been around since 2001 and has as many demos, EPs and what-not as this band has to its name would have its shit together in some respect, or any respect, for that matter. But you’d be dead wrong and we sophisticated listeners would be all the poorer for it. I don’t mean to suggest that my enjoyment is borne from some condescending, hipster-inflected ironic detachment. On the contrary, the naivete on display here converges into a necro vibe that might not ever feel terrifying or oppressive, but still bespeaks a charm and integrity that polished bands often lack and poseur bands couldn’t find with a roadmap.
