REVIEW: The Loveless - Star Rover Euphonious Records, 2002
6/10
The Loveless - Star Rover - cover art In a time where gothic rock is becoming increasingly popular Denmark also make a contribution to the genre with The Loveless. This band is made up of Brian Hansen, Kim Larsen and Jesper Saltoft who were all members of the doom metal band Saturnus until the release of their album "Martyre" in the year 2000. In the music of their new band we can trace influences like Katatonia, The Cure, HIM and Seigmen. They will probably find a lot of fans in Denmark among those people who enjoy gothic rock / metal hybrids but to me they are yet another act among a hundred others. The problem that most bands face today is just this. When almost everything has been done already it is hard to find a sound of your own which is exactly what it takes to reach the top and also to reach me. I would still like to recommend those of you who are big fans of the genre to at least give these guys a chance because they are well respected and experienced musicians. I am glad to see that there are more metal bands coming out of Denmark but unfortunately there has been nothing groundbreaking since King Diamond made his mark on the world. Atmospheric, melancholic, suggestive but not a very exciting debut album.
