REVIEW: The Mist And The Morning Dew - demo Self-financed, 2003
7.5/10
The Mist And The Morning Dew - demo - cover art Mixing folk music and black or death metal has become the new trend in "mainstream" extreme music nowadays but there are not many who try mixing folk influences with doom metal. The Finnish band The Mist And The Morning Dew is however one of them. Those of you familiar with the Finnish metal scene have probably already heard of this band which got together in the year 2000, featuring experienced musicians who have played with bands like The Seventh Planet, Shape Of Despair, Finntroll, Shaman and Unholy. This is the band's first release but it clearly shows that they have taken the time needed to compose quality material and also that they are serious about this project. The opening track "Dusk" sets the trance-like atmosphere right away and the beauty of melancholy shines with its presence throughout not only this song but also throughout the rest of the cd. "Dusk" is by far my favorite of these four tracks as it has some wonderful melodic violin playing by Shaman's Jaakko Lemmetty. The music is overall unusually melodic for a doom metal band but it is also monotonous, melancholic, dreamy and relaxing. This is music perfect for a misty or rainy summer day when the sun begins to set. The cover art is magnificently well done. It's simple but in a brilliant way it says everything that needs to be said and it shows a sense of style and class. The Mist And The Morning Dew is one of the most interesting young bands the genre has to offer right now and I'm looking foward to hearing more from them. There is one thing that I don't like too much about the album though. The female vocalist Veera Muhli has a very weak voice or perhaps it's just a mixing mistake because she can hardly be heard sometimes. Otherwise the production is very good indeed.
