REVIEW: The Morningside - The Wind, the Trees and the Shadows of the Past BadMoodMan Music, 2007
6.5/10
The Morningside - The Wind, the Trees and the Shadows of the Past - cover art Katatonia's Brave Murder Day and Sounds Of Decay represented the best from Blackheim and co., in my opinion. Early works had their charm and grace, but failed to make it, while latter works are weak, repetitive, more commercial and uninteresting. Well, these Russians could appeal to the listener having similar views, since The Wind, the Trees and the Shadows of the Past could resemble a homage to that band in that period. The repetitive guitar notes, the mellow harmonies and guitar sound... the next song comes in the same dress, until the point there is a melody already used in the second track. Then, the album takes a shift in the fourth track and fortunately for us all we realize The Morningside is not certainly a Katatonia copycat; these other passages are away from that stream, getting into clear Agalloch influences, among other possible ones. This band needs some time to pave their own path, to stray from the so-clean similarities and to conform a sonic body of their own. They have a good sound, a nice technical performance, but lack offering something really worthy or crushing. They become boring in the end and fail to hook in one way or another, easily passing away and fading in time. Not bad, not really exciting, too easy melodies most of the time, and overall a forgettable experience after some listenings. By the way, nice pictures in the booklet.
