REVIEW: The Mushroom River Band - Simsalabim Meteor City, 2002
9/10
The Mushroom River Band - Simsalabim - cover art From Värnamo, Sweden, hails The Mushroom River Band which is one of the leading stoner rock bands to come out of the Nordic countries in the last couple of years. The band was formed in 1996 and in 2000 they released their debut album "Music For The World Beyond" through the American rock label Meteor City. This new album is also released through Meteor City in America and Century Media Records in Europe. The vocalist of this band, Spice, is probably known to most of you if you are into stoner rock since he used to be a member of Spiritual Beggars as well. Sweden has become one of the leading countries as it comes to metal of most kinds and stoner rock is no exception. The Mushroom River Band may have a stupid name and an even more stupid album title but AND the most dumb looking album cover I have ever seen but their music rocks like few others. There is no room for breathing anywhere on this album since these guys are fans of speedy and heavy music which I'm glad for. The vocals are very nice, ranging from the new Entombed to the common stoner rock sound. Stoner rock in itself sounds very much like a mix of dirty rock'n'roll and death metal, two genres with an old and well-known history in Sweden. This is not meant to be my cup of tea but I really like The Mushroom River Band despite their weird exterior. In short, this is a great and very intense album!
