REVIEW: The Provenance - 25th Hour; Bleeding Scarlet Records, 2001
7/10
The Provenance - 25th Hour; Bleeding - cover art The Provenance was formed in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1995 by a bunch of musicians who were influenced by bands like My Dying Bride, Anathema, The Gathering, Arcturus, Änglagård and the progressive rock bands from the 70's. They wanted to create something new and different while still maintaining the classic touch and this is the first label result from them. There are several interesting aspects of creative music shown on this album like the beautiful female vocals from Emma Hellström (I once had a classmate with the same name but I doubt it is the same person...), the nice duality of clean male and female vocals and the beautiful Amorphis-sounding melodies like on "Shut Down". As far as I know The Provenance are one of the first bands who have tried to mix the gothic metal world with progressive 70's rock. They have done a fairly good job doing this, a lot thanks to the exceptional voice of Emma, heard at its best on "Ignominy Embodied" although a bit altered it seems like. The Italian label Scarlet Records are very keen on signing Swedish bands but what surprises me is the high quality of most of them. If The Provenance hang on to this sound they have a real interesting thing going although it is still a long way from perfection.
