REVIEW: The Quill - Voodoo Caravan Steamhammer Records, 2002
8/10
The Quill - Voodoo Caravan - cover art This is the third album from the Swedish stoner rock band The Quill who are now ready to release the follow-up to 1999's "Silver Haze". With a title as strange as "Voodoo Caravan" the first band one might come to think of is Cathedral. Now that is not too bad because there are obvious traces from their sound in the music of this album. This may be just a coincidence since both bands have found their inspiration from the same sources. The most important one of these is probably Black Sabbath and the vocalist Magnus Ekvall actually sometimes sing like Ozzy did back in the good old days, of course not with the same voice but the way of singing is similar as you will most certainly notice on the very strong title track of the album. I must admit that stoner rock is generally not my favorite genre but then again there are not that many bands playing this kind of music. The Quill is one of the best ones I have heard so far and if you are into bands like Spiritual Beggars, Cathedral and Black Sabbath you will probably find a lot to enjoy on this release. By the way, their bass player Roger Nilsson also plays with Spiritual Beggars and he has also been touring in the US together with Swedish death metallers Arch Enemy.
