So I get this album and look at the cover, the last thing on my mind is brutal death metal, I look at the members of the band and again the last thing I am expecting is extremely technical and intense music. However life has a funny way of giving you the unexpected, and after putting this CD in for the first time I can only say that I was very pleasantly surprised. Whether it’s intentional or not there is a great deal of Necrophagist influence apparent in this release and it shines beautifully throughout. Overall the sound is fantastic and being a stickler for production I found little wrong in the listening experience that is presented. The bassists (as there are two bassists who play on this album) play wonderfully and are an integral part of the mood and sound projected on this album. The vocalist has a good deep death metal growl that he interchanges with screaming throughout “The Shattering Begins”, as a whole he lends a good death metal vocal performance to the project. Both of the guitarists play extremely well and handle some great leads, their technical playing ability adds a lot to the overall appeal of this release.
Now if I were to nit-pick about problems on this release it would probably include the drumming which at times can go from technical and great to annoying and grating, and the play time which clocks in at a meager 30 minutes. However this release overall greatly piqued my interest, and I will definitely keep my eyes open for further releases by this brilliant new band. Highly recommended to fans of Necrophagist or any other absurdly technical band.
